Warsaw, (Polish Warszawa) Capital of Poland,
on the river Vistula; population (1985)
1,649,000. Industries include engineering,
food processing, printing, clothing, and
pharmaceuticals. Founded in the 13th century,
it replaced Krakow as capital in 1595. Its
university was founded in 1818. It was taken
by the Germans 27 Sept 1939, and 250,000
Poles were killed during two months of street
fighting that started 1 Aug 1944. It was
finally liberated 17 Jan 1945. The old city
was virtually destroyed in World War II but
has been reconstructed. Marie Curie was born
here.
