  1. Warsaw, (Polish Warszawa) Capital of Poland,
  2. on the river Vistula; population (1985)
  3. 1,649,000. Industries include engineering,
  4. food processing, printing, clothing, and
  5. pharmaceuticals. Founded in the 13th century,
  6. it replaced Krakow as capital in 1595. Its
  7. university was founded in 1818. It was taken
  8. by the Germans 27 Sept 1939, and 250,000
  9. Poles were killed during two months of street
  10. fighting that started 1 Aug 1944. It was
  11. finally liberated 17 Jan 1945. The old city
  12. was virtually destroyed in World War II but
  13. has been reconstructed. Marie Curie was born
  14. here.
